A mediator serves as the neutral assisting the parties to dialogue and discuss their disputes and hopefully bring the parties together to a mutually agreeable solution. The mediator does not have the authority to impose a decision upon the parties.
In arbitration, the parties agree ahead of time to be bound by the decision of the arbitrator. They present their evidence to the arbitrator similar in many ways to what is done in a court and the arbitrator then decides with final authority.
